Project Overview

Keeper is a short, narrative-driven comic created for SCAD Generate, a fast-paced creative event built around intense time-boxed challenges. The prompt for this event was to create a fully realized 20-page comic in 24 hours. At the time, I had very little experience producing finished comics, but I decided to take on the challenge and build a complete, self-contained story from concept to final pages within the deadline.

The story follows a robot who encounters an angel and gradually learns that the world has ended, leaving it as the only non-angel entity still in existence. The project focused heavily on mood, pacing, and visual storytelling rather than polish or complexity.

Role & Process

I worked solo on Keeper, handling every part of the project, including story, layouts, line work, and final presentation. Because of the extreme time constraint, the entire comic was produced in black and white using Photoshop, which allowed me to work quickly and stay focused on clarity and flow rather than color rendering.

The process was highly iterative and instinct-driven, with decisions being made in real time to keep the project moving forward and ensure a complete submission by the deadline.

Outcome

Keeper was completed and submitted within the 24-hour window and was later reviewed by judges from IDW Publishing. The project placed second overall, and I was the only non–sequential art major to place in the competition. In addition to the placement, I received detailed professional feedback on storytelling and presentation, which made the experience especially valuable.

The comic was later picked up by another group and expanded with pseudo-animation and voiceover. I was flattered by the selection and work that went into. Very well executed and really fit with my original intentions for the piece.

What I Learned

Keeper was my first experience creating a fully polished comic under an extremely tight deadline, and it taught me how much planning, decision-making, and stamina that kind of work actually requires. I had very little prior experience making finished comics, so I had to figure out storytelling, pacing, composition, and clarity on the fly while racing the clock. The time constraint forced me to commit to ideas quickly instead of overworking them, and it showed me how important it is to prioritize readability and narrative flow over perfection. It also gave me confidence that I can take on unfamiliar formats, work fast under pressure, and still deliver something complete and emotionally coherent by the deadline.
