Project Overview

SCADPro: Ronald McDonald House is an ongoing industry-sponsored collaboration focused on creating meaningful, uplifting experiences for families staying at a newly opened Ronald McDonald House in North Druid Hills, just outside of Atlanta. The client presented the project as a blue-sky challenge, asking the team to explore how digital and virtual experiences could enhance an already thoughtfully designed physical space.

One of the central concepts developed by the team was a series of fantasy worlds inhabited by friendly creatures that function as virtual companions or pets for children staying at the house. These experiences were designed to be interactive and comforting, blending imagination with accessibility and care.

Role & Contributions

I initially joined the project on the creature concept team, but as the project evolved and the team’s needs became clearer, I transitioned to the environment art team, where my background in world-building and visual storytelling could have the most impact.

My work focused on:

  • Creating environment concepts for fantasy worlds tied to the virtual pet experiences

  • Developing more refined background illustrations to guide later 3D modeling

  • Producing visual assets that could be shared directly with the Ronald McDonald House team

  • Contributing to the project’s process book, documenting the evolution of ideas from early concepts to refined visuals

The goal of my work was to establish a strong sense of place and tone—spaces that felt imaginative, welcoming, and emotionally safe.

Outcome

The project is still in progress, with the team actively refining concepts and deliverables. A major component of the work includes a detailed process book that communicates not just final ideas, but how those ideas developed over time. This has allowed the client to see the full creative journey and better understand how the proposed experiences could be realized.

What I Learned

This project taught me how important it is to stay flexible and recognize where your skills can be most useful on a large team. Stepping away from creature design and into environment work was the right choice, and it reinforced how much I enjoy building spaces that support story and emotion. I also learned how to create work for a non-traditional audience, where clarity, comfort, and accessibility matter as much as visual appeal. Most of all, working on a project with real emotional stakes changed how I think about design—it’s not just about making something look good, but about making something that genuinely helps people.
